In a world with too much information (most of which isn't much use) our solution is to read only the words on the left. We stay away from text that is in the middle or on the right. And just to be clear, we aren't talking about left and right the way politicians do. We are talking about literally avoiding the middle and right parts of a page, or computer screen. It's an approach to getting through the mind-numbing barrage of words and images that is hurled at us every day.
Some people ask, “but doesn't it get confusing when you only read words on the left? If for example, you tried to read a novel, wouldn't it be hard to follow the plot? And what about newspaper articles that appear on the right or middle? Won't you miss important information if you only read the news that appears in the left columns?”
Well, here is our response. Does anyone really have time to read novels anymore? That's so “last century.” And as for newspapers, well, chances are if you miss something important one day you'll catch it again later. Besides, no matter where you choose to place your attention, even if you include the middle and the right, you are still missing tons of stuff during every moment. Even right now as you read this, think of all the alternative locations your attention could be. It's staggering. But rather than get anxious about it, we just commit to words on the left and let the other stuff go. It is very comforting. And what makes this web site special is that this is the one place you can go in the world where the middle and right text has been eliminated altogether so that you don't even get the slightest bit of anxiety. Sure, we are missing out on other information just by being here, but at least it's not staring us in the face, mocking us with our inability to absorb it all. This is a little oasis in the sea of overload, a sanctuary for the growing community of left-only text readers.
Sure, there will be “naysayers” and people who don't line up with our important innovation. That's fine; they can go start their own web community. Thanks to the Internet, you can be part of whatever community you want. If you happen to be someone who's had it with all those pesky words in the middle and on the right, then you have found yourself a new home. Welcome to wordsontheleft.com.
